The Mentawai Islands and other Sumatran offshore islands are home to some of the most consistent, highquality waves on the planet. Warm water, perfect reef setups, and Indian Ocean swells that just keep on rolling into the catchers mitt that is Indonesia.
But like anywhere in the world, the surf changes with the seasons. Some months are all about heavy barrels and longperiod swell, while others are mellow, glassy, and perfect for intermediate surfers or anyone who wants to avoid the peakseason crowds.
Swell and weather conditions change continually and quickly each day and each charter. No two charters are ever the same. No two seasons are exactly the same. The unpredictability of life on the equator is what makes this corner of the world so special.
If you’re planning a trip and wondering when to go, here’s a breakdown of what each season brings in both the Mentawais and Sumatra.
The Mentawai Islands: A YearRound Wave Machine
The Mentawais sit about 150 km off the coast of West Sumatra, right in the firing line of Indian Ocean swell. The islands are famous for their consistency. You can score waves here any month of the year but the vibes and conditions shift depending on the season.
Peak Season (April – October)
This is the time of year when the Indian Ocean really wakes up. Longperiod swells roll in from deep in the Southern Hemisphere, lighting up every reef, point, and slab across the island chain.
What to expect:
- Bigger, more powerful surf.
- Consistent swells in the 4–10 ft range.
- Offshore winds more often.
This is the season for advanced surfers chasing the classic Mentawai experience; hollow lefts, mechanical rights. Spots like HT’s, Rifles, Bankvaults, and Greenbush come alive. These months also allow some of the more fickle gems to light up also spreading the charter fleet out more.
If you’re chasing the best of the best, this is your window.
Shoulder Season (March & November)
These months are underrated gems. The swell is still solid, the winds are generally light, and the crowds thin out as the peak season begins or winds down.
Why surfers love it:
- Fun, clean surf in the 3–6 ft range.
- Fewer boats and charter groups.
- More variety in conditions.
- Great for intermediate to advanced surfers.
You will get medium sized of swells, but the vibe is more relaxed. Many seasoned Mentawai travellers swear by these months.
OffSeason (December – February)
“OffSeason” in the Mentawais doesn’t mean flat. It’s far from it. Swells are smaller and less frequent, but the waves are still super fun, especially for intermediates or anyone who prefers playful, glassy conditions over heavy barrels.
Expect:
- Smaller surf (2–4 ft, with the occasional bigger pulse).
- Light winds and glassy mornings.
- Fewer surfers.
- Cheaper trips and more availability.
Some surf camps and charter boats close during this period, but the ones that stay open still score fun, empty waves. If you’re not chasing big surf and don’t mind a bit of weather, it can be a surprisingly good time to visit.
So… When Should You Go?
It really depends on what kind of surf trip you want:
- Chasing big, powerful, worldclass waves? Go April–October.
- Want great waves without the crowds? Try March, April, October, or November.
- Prefer smaller, fun, cruisy conditions? The offseason (Dec–Feb) is your friend.
The beauty of both the Mentawais and Sumatra is that there’s always something to surf. The seasons just shape the style of waves you’ll get.
